Double Dribble

When a player dribbles the ball with two hands simultaneously or continues to dribble after allowing the ball to come to rest in one or both hands.

Foul

• A personal foul is a breach of the rules that concerns illegal personal contact with an opponent.
• Teams are allowed 5 fouls per half. Each foul after that results in a point to the opposition. The reset happens at half time.

Travel

A violation that occurs when a player holding the ball moves one or both feet illegally (more than 2 steps).

Out of Court

When a ball crosses a boundary line determined to be outside the field of play, an out of bounds call is made.

Goal

Scored on any shot or tap other than a free throw.

Line Violation

A player has their foot over the throw-in line.

Defence

• Band marking (colour bands) will be enforced for Year 3/4 Miniball, Year 5/6 Miniball, and Year 5/6 full court Basketball.
• Year 7/8 Basketball: man-to-man marking. No zone defence.

Player Violation of Line

When the defending player has their hand over the line defending the ball from an out-of-court pass. Players' hands must be directly in the air and not come over the line.

Mercy Rule

• If winning by 20 points: direct your team to get back to halfway after a score or turnover.
• If winning by 30 or more points: the winning team must go to the back line after they score and must not move until the opposing team has reached halfway.

Game Times

• Wednesdays: 2 × 12-minute halves (running clock).
• Mondays Year 5/6: 2 × 13-minute halves — numbered bibs, 1+1 shooting, stop clock last 2 minutes if within 10 points.
• Mondays Year 7/8: 2 × 15-minute halves — numbered bibs, 1+1 shooting, stop clock last 2 minutes if within 10 points.
• 1-minute break between halves.
• Substitutions allowed on any whistle — advise the umpire first.
• Each team must provide someone for score bench duties.

Equipment

• Years 3–4: reduced basket height of 8ft. Years 5–6: basket height 10ft.
• Monday: full basketball hoops.
• All players in the Monday league MUST wear a mouthguard.
• Appropriate footwear (non-marking shoes) and team uniform required.
• All jewellery must be removed. No caps, beanies, hoodies, bare feet or school shoes.
• School teams must provide a team manager (staff or parent).
• Defaults: if after 5 minutes a team still does not have 3 players on court, they default the game.
• Teams must have a girl on court at all times. If you have no girls, inform the league coordinators.

Fighting

The throwing and landing of a punch is an automatic ban for the remainder of the season. The referee must note the incident on the score sheet and bring it to the court controller's attention.

Spectator Conduct

• Abusive language or swearing will not be tolerated — spectators will be asked to leave. Escalate all misconduct to the Court Controller.
• Arguing with referees, bad language, or unsportsmanlike behaviour will result in a technical foul, one free shot, and side-line possession.

Disputes

A dispute form is available from your venue controller. Write a brief description on the back of the score sheet. Do not approach the referee — see the venue controller or Referee Coordinator.
