Constraints-Led from the Ground Up

Just A Game Coach Education is led by Simon Roseingrave — one of the formative creators of the New Zealand Cricket Smash Play approach, built on constraints-led and game-based learning principles. Since that work, Simon has been exploring how to create both sport-specific and generic coach education opportunities that give coaches the understanding and tools to actually change how they work.

All Just A Game staff are well-versed in these approaches and form part of the ongoing support mechanisms following any education engagement — so the learning doesn't stop in the room.

What We Explore Together

Constraints & Environment Design

Exploring constraints — environmental design and game creation and redesign — to shape movement and decision-making without direct instruction.

Skill Adaptability & Acquisition

Understanding functional movement as a reaction to game situations — and why it's okay for athletes to move differently. Challenging the technique myth.

Participant Motivation

Enhancing exploration, self-discovery and self-achievement — and how to create game-like situations that naturally build engagement and intensity.

Perception-Action Coupling

Building response and perception simultaneously — rather than isolating them. Creating external focuses instead of internalising movement.

Coach-Participant Connection

Building relationships that support athlete learning — including peer-to-peer and backyard learning, and the value of coached conversation over correction.

Encouraging the Challenge

Creating environments where athletes seek challenge — building the mindset and environment structures that make difficulty feel like opportunity.

Social Models Interwoven in Sport

Just A Game's education approach incorporates social development models alongside skill and game design — because the athlete's personal development, connectedness and sense of identity matter as much as their technical ability. We draw on well-established frameworks to support this:

Mana Taiohi
Hellison's TPSR Model
Te Whare Tapa Whā
Balance is Better (Sport NZ)
Physical Literacy
