Athlete Adaptability Programme

Developing Dynamic Real Sport Intelligence in Every Athlete

A structured, evidence-based programme that builds adaptable, intelligent athletes — ready for any sport, any environment, any challenge.

Built on Evidence  ·  Designed with Purpose  ·  Measured for All

The Athlete Adaptability Programme (AAP) is not about specialisation — it's about building the perceptual, cognitive and movement foundation that makes athletes better at every sport they play.

Programme Outcome

Dynamic Real Sport Intelligence

Athletes who complete the AAP develop the ability to perceive affordances, decide and respond effectively in any sporting environment — the hallmark of a truly adaptable athlete. This is DRSI: Dynamic Real Sport Intelligence.

The Approach

Grounded in Constraints-Led Learning

The AAP is built on an ecological dynamics framework — the same evidence base that underpins elite athlete development worldwide. Rather than drilling fixed techniques, we design environments that invite athletes to perceive, explore and find their own solutions.

Constraints-Led Approach (CLA)

Task, environment and individual constraints are deliberately manipulated to create rich learning environments. Athletes self-organise and discover movement solutions — rather than copy a prescribed technique. Decisions emerge from the environment, not from instruction.

Ecological Dynamics

Athletes and their environments are inseparable in learning. Affordances — the opportunities for action that the environment offers — guide development. Variability is a feature, not a flaw, in building skill adaptability.

Perception-Action Coupling

Athletes train to read and react simultaneously — there is no separation between seeing, deciding and moving. The programme develops the perceptual skills that separate intelligent athletes from purely physical ones.

Dynamic Environment Design

Sessions are designed — not just run. Environments adapt as athletes develop, and constraints are adjusted to keep the learning challenge optimal. Learning happens through structured challenge, not repetition.

Representative Learning Design

Every Measurement Game represents the actual perceptual cues, decision-making moments and physical responses athletes encounter in real competition. Transfer to sport is by design, not coincidence.

Perceive
Read the environment and detect affordances in real time
Decide
Select the most appropriate action under constraint
Adapt
Self-organise and find solutions that work for the individual
The Framework

Built on Five Pillars

Every element of the programme is grounded in evidence and designed to work together as a complete, coherent system.

PILLAR 01

Designed for Learning

Constraints-led environments that challenge athletes to perceive, adapt and self-organise — building intelligent movers rather than technique-followers.

PILLAR 02

Measurement Beyond Comparison

Athletes are measured against themselves — not peers or norms. Personal bests are celebrated at every level. Growth is visible, meaningful and athlete-owned. The same programme delivers uniquely relevant insight to every stakeholder, without comparing one person to another.

PILLAR 03

Built to Manage

A digital platform and reporting portal that gives practitioners, athletes and organisations the data they need to make good decisions in real time.

PILLAR 04

Expertise. Resource. Support.

Evidence-based programme delivery backed by ongoing practitioner training, resources, and professional development — however the programme is delivered.

PILLAR 05

Empowering the Balance

Cross-code, inclusive, and aligned with Sport NZ's Long-Term Athlete Development framework — built for the whole athlete across their entire development journey.

The Expertise Behind It

Designed by Practitioners. Grounded in Research.

The AAP was designed by Simon Roseingrave — former National Plan Lead at New Zealand Cricket — with an academic foundation led by Dr Ian Renshaw, Associate Professor of Skill Acquisition at QUT. It is grounded in the work of the Constraints Collective, whose expertise spans more than 100 professional sporting organisations worldwide.

Measurement & Assessment Design

The Measurement Games were specifically designed to assess adaptability — not just physical output. Each game captures perception, decision-making and movement quality together, giving athletes and practitioners a complete picture of development that no single fitness test can provide. Built by practitioners, for practitioners, and grounded in the same ecological dynamics evidence base that underpins the programme as a whole.

How It's Delivered

Two Ways to Run the Programme

The AAP is designed to work in the way that suits your organisation — whether you want to build internal capability or bring in JAG expertise directly.

Self-Delivered

Your Team, Your Setting

Your practitioners deliver the programme within your organisation. JAG provides the training, resources and ongoing support to make it work — you build the capability in-house.

  • Practitioner training and certification
  • Full Measurement & Programme Games library
  • Intuitive Session guides and delivery resources
  • JAG Portal for all athletes and staff
  • Ongoing programme support from JAG
JAG-Delivered

Expert Delivery, Your Environment

JAG practitioners come to you and deliver the programme directly with your athletes. Ideal where in-house expertise isn't yet in place, or where you want to start immediately.

  • Hands-on delivery by JAG practitioners
  • Full programme measurement and reporting
  • JAG Portal for all athletes
  • Option to transition to self-delivery over time
Who We Work With

Built for These Environments

The AAP is designed to work wherever young athletes develop

Secondary Schools

Sports teams · PE classes · Academies

Integrate the AAP into PE, sports teams or dedicated sport academies. Build measurable, Sport NZ-aligned outcomes for every student athlete.

  • PE curriculum integration
  • School sports team development
  • Sport academy programmes

Sports Clubs

Teams & Squads

Give your club's young athletes a development foundation that makes them better at your sport and every sport they play — not just early specialists.

  • Teams and Wider Squads
  • Club-wide development frameworks

Regional & National Organisations

RSOs · NSOs

Deploy the AAP across multiple clubs, schools or regions. Build a consistent athlete development framework with data and reporting that works at scale.

  • Regional sport teams, squads or programmes
  • National sport body pathways
