How We Do What We Do

Coaching (Athletes and Education)

Just A Game builds its offerings on a range of principles, all of which are aligned to Sport NZ leading philosophies, including Balance is Better and Physical Literacy.

Coaching with Constraints Led Approaches is the foundation principle, incorporating Game-Based learning and all of the benefits that this can bring.

What are some of the cool things that Constraints coaching allows us to do?

  • Build an environment to allow athlete / participant exploration and outcomes - this is not ignoring technique, rather it is building “technique” (functional movement to achieve an outcome) as a reaction to game-like situations. This is the modern way to do things - not coach from a text book from 50 or more years ago (which is the prevalent coaching approach in NZ).

  • Build response and perception at the same time - Perception - Action Coupling - instead of isolating the two from each other.

  • Creating External focuses rather than internalising movement.

  • Build engagement, enjoyment and intensity through game situations.

Balance is Better - play a range of sports, play the right amount and more. For Just A Game the real drive under Balance is Better is the creation of a well-rounded athlete, which means:

  • Personal understanding and control of their sports journey.

  • The desire to be physically active for life.

  • Enhanced skills, adaptation and athleticism to bring all of this to life.
